Sandra Nichols

Sandra has had a dual career on completion of her Master of Environmental Planning degree in 1996 in the areas of environmental project management in both state and local government and in research at Macquarie University’s Graduate School of the Environment and the Australian Research Institute in Education for Sustainability (ARIES). Sandra has also developed teaching and learning materials for academics at Macquarie University in sustainability, climate change adaptation and energy efficiency.

Sandra’s most recent research project, Education for Sustainability and the Australian Curriculum Project, was funded by the Australian Government and undertaken by the Australian Education for Sustainability Alliance. Sandra conducted part of the research and wrote the final report, which was completed in 2014.

The report highlighted the need for professional development for teachers in Education for Sustainability and, more specifically, in the recommended approach of whole-school sustainability planning and how to integrate sustainability as a core theme into the Australian Curriculum. Sandra offers workshops in both these areas.

Sandra originally trained as a social science secondary teacher and spent 16 years working as such in secondary schools across three sectors and in two states. Combining her knowledge and expertise as a teacher with her academic understanding of Education for Sustainability (EfS) has put her in the best space possible to train teachers in EfS through her BOSTES accredited workshop offerings.

Sandra also provides technical editing services through her small consultancy, Enviro Doc, having worked as assistant editor for the Royal Australian Planning Institute on their professional journal, Australian Planner, for four years.

Sandra’s commitment to sustainability as a way to build resilience in communities for the future has been demonstrated by her co-founding of Transition Epping in 2010 and her current leadership of Permaculture Blue Mountains. She also runs workshops in practical living skills such as making natural cleaning products and has a separate business as an independent representative for the Organic and Natural Enterprise Group (ONEgroup) selling Miessence certified organic personal care products (www.changetheworldorganics.com).
